One thing you could say to the world: This is all being classified, right?

About Jesse White

Jesse's often had to be on the move since he lived with his uncle in an RV for most of his life. The only reason he's been able to go to Tsunagari is because his uncle thought he needed to learn how to live on his own and Jesse didn't want to live of going from concert to concert. Said uncle was a big time musician who constantly toured around the world, which mostly explains why Jesse is the way he is with him liking to play guitar. From being so scared of everything in the world, Jesse turned to a life of trying to figure out and listen to his own delusions, which not only helped him stay out of trouble but also hindered him from actually having a proper life. This allowed him to become a pretty good theorist and journalist later on, even getting into hacking and then dealing with classified information as much as he wanted. Of course, he never did publish his findings, but he wrote down everything that he could get his hands on before the government got theirs on it. He later started turning to drugs to calm his nerves down, and soon went completely crazy as a person from there on out. Often when he went to school he did his best to completely go under the radar, and even start dealing drugs out to other students who were willing to pay enough money. Though he's been able to keep off the record and away from the systems for most of his life, the alternate realm thrust him into a situation where he has to work with others who see him as nothing but a nuisance. The true challenge he must conquer as well has to be his paranoia, but even then, Jesse has always been able to turn any poison into a solution for himself.

Jesse Game Guide

Inspirations

Jesse is so obviously a Breaking Bad reference of course, but he also takes inspiration from characters like Kobeni from Chainsaw Man or Zenitsu from Demon Slayer. My whole idea when making Jesse was to make a "boy-failure" character who is just a complete mess and utter loser, while also being able to at least make him useful to the team despite how annoying he can be. At first he wasn't even going to exist, but I decided to keep on working on him and made him more than just a jokey breaking bad reference. The funny part is that much like to the audience, he's practically a walking joke to the rest of the cast, but looking deeper into him shows an afraid outcast who despite his delusions, only has those delusions because of how much he's been hurt. So at first he was "Funny breaking bad" and turned into "damn i'd be like that too if I went through what he did." for me.

Behind the Scenes

Working on Jesse was probably one of the toughest juggling acts i've ever had to deal with when writing a character. See when making an annoying character you have to make sure that they're not too annoying to where they have no likeable traits, but you also have to make sure that they're actually perceived as annoying to begin with. I thought at first that giving him depth would be the hardest part, but working on his backstory and timeline was actually one of the more fun bits of his character. In the game version of Subliminarity he was also a weird mixed bag that just like in his personality, he felt out of place but from a purposeful standpoint. His paranoia helps with detecting enemies just like in the book, and if anything I like to think of Jesse as being just as smart of Lucas but in different ways. (which explains why they contrast and bicker so much) His casual pajama esque design even matches with this, making him look like he just wants to be home even in normal settings outside the alternate realm. Overall Jesse started as a character who was almost cut to the main cast into being an amazing comic relief, theorist and one that I poured a lot of my heart into.
