About Kizen Wolf
Living in the slums of the city, Kizen had to grow up quickly and adapt to the crime ridden life he had to live. Despite many of the things that Kizen had to go through, he was initially a good kid and even had someone to call his one and only friend. He was often picked on and beaten up, along with being robbed several times and living in a rough household too, but that's just how life was living in those parts. After going separate ways with his friend, he decided to go wild abandon and try to adjust to the life he lived. He started illegally street racing and taking back what was lost from him just to get enough money for him and his mom to keep going. Later on, since the lines where they started to cross the districts started to change, he was set to attend Tsunagari High, which had a much different atmosphere compared to what home was like. Being known as the toughest delinquent in the school, he was often left to his own devices, and his teachers didn't even look at him. Despite that, he still did his work and over the years, tried to keep his criminal activity hidden so his mom would never find out and worry about him. Academics were the least of his worries, as the biggest problem now had to be dealing with 9 other brats in the alternate realm. Monsters and killers barely scared him, and if anything it felt like home all over again. The true challenge wasn't trying to keep himself alive, but also having to keep everyone else alive so he could live on.
Kizen Game Guide
Inspirations
Kizen's archetype is already really popular, so I could pull a lot of inspiration from several different series to figure out how to write Mr. "Tch, whatever." Felix from Fire Emblem Three Houses, Aniki from Worlds End Club, and just about any series you could think of that has an edge lord, he was probably based on them. Aside from that, I really decided to go original with him, and also base him off of my own experiences. When I say "He's just like me fr fr" I quite literally mean I based him off of how I acted and felt about the world. Now I didn't do any of the drug stuff, but the general look, attitude, and demeanor, that all came from what I acted like too. Kizen is his own character though, and working on him was such a treat due to how much I could expand upon who he is and what he goes through, or already has gone through. Probably explains why he's in my top favorites tbh.
Behind the Scenes
Although Kizen was really well-implemented, design-wise and story-wise, gameplay-wise was the real challenge in making him fit in. He serves as making some good in group conflict while also carrying the team in some points, but making a solo character effective in one of the most team-based games I've made yet was something I took a long time tackling. I like how he was handled though and how he serves as a character, and I'm pretty sure everyone loves a toughie who has a secret soft spot for things. Fun fact, his outfit was actually based on the outfit I used to wear. This was mainly because I get so easily cold all the time, so I constantly wore that same winter jacket and an all-black outfit, so in turn I decided to make Kizen do the same thing as he's also constantly freezing. Talk about "Trauma makes you cold" huh. Writing his backstory as well was not only one of the most complicated and tragic out of the group but the most fun as well. His arc of course is gonna take a long time, but when he comes around to the rest of the group it's gonna feel so satisfying for him to finally be himself. Overall, Kizen's archetype may be a bit overplayed, but I feel like I made a perfect blend of useful, not too much of an asshole but definitely an asshole to the group.
